For those who don’t know EvE Online, Fanfest is a yearly social event sponsored by CCP (the game developer). Fanfest is a big spotlight on the game, on its trends and on the summer expansion. In EvE fact receives two free expansions a year: one in the summer and one before Christmas.

Every year players and fans come to CCP’s headquarters, located on Iceland and spend a week of fun, immersion, mad feasting all centered around their favored spaceships game. Fanfest panels and sessions are streamed over internet in low and high resolution as well.

This year Fanfest comes pretty close to the summer expansion and will cover a lot about it.

Not just spaceships

This year Fanfest is going to cover several juicy topics. Among them I can’t wait and see what they are doing about Valkyrie, that is a dogfight space combat game set in the EvE Online universe. It’s pretty much known I have always missed a “twitchy” dogfight module for EvE combat. I come from ancient awesome games like X-Wing and Tie Fighter (and several others) and really love frantically mashing buttons and swinging joysticks like a madman!

However there’s another big, no, huge change coming to EvE: the industry overhaul. Now, on surface this might look like something quite minor. Some more PvP or PvE oriented players actually complained about how inconspicuous the summer expansion is going to be.

They couldn’t be more wrong!

Backup the previous folder before doing anything with that new zip.

It’s expecially important to not mix the two versions files and to preserve your configuration (.ini) file!

In fact the updated version comes with the default .ini file and if you overwrite yours, you’ll have to re-customize it from scratch.

Markets: introduction

Markets are a fascinating, fundamental yet so unknown feature of ancient and modern life alike.

The first part of this chapter shows a brief general introduction to the markets, the second goes deep into the more theoretical elements that are at the foundation of the markets.

This trading course will focus a lot on currency pairs trading, also known as Forex. The reason for this is because Forex is the lowest entry barrier, cheapest financial market a perspective trader may start training with. Whereas other markets could require expensive software, market data feed fees and a minimum of several thousands dollars account, Forex may be approached with as low as .

Markets: the basics

Markets are not something complicate or abstract, they are something we live every day. Every time someone buys or even barter something, a trade happens. The place where this activity happens is called a market. The most basic market features a buyer and a seller, this scales up to thousands of buyers / sellers, to exchanges and brokerages but in the end the concept is still the same: counterparts taking one of two positions: buying (also known as “going long”) or selling (also known as “going short”).

This course is aimed at trading a specific kind of assets, called “financial products“, also known as securities. It also covers the markets where these securities are exchanged. Securities have often used to be contracts written on paper. They are a legally binding contract between two or more parties often precisely specifying all sorts of fine details. Here is an example of a very common future contract, called e-mini S&P 500.

These days most contracts are electronically traded through high speed dedicated communication lines and Internet.

The markets may be operated with this method. Each market may be tradeded by using specific software called “trading platforms”. Those range from free solutions with basic charting capabilities and market orders entry to very expensive and complicate platforms that include very advanced orders structures.

Brief list of common markets

Follows a list of the most common markets and some of their characteristics.

• Forex or currency pairs: the easiest to get into, the lowest entry barrier of all. Trading platforms often come free (expecially one called Metatrader), brokers accepts small accounts, some times as low as . Despite this, Forex markets are not the simplest to tackle of all due to an amount of “background trading noise” that may somewhat affect price.
  
  
• Futures, featuring currencies, indexes, metals and many other commodities: they have higher requirements than Forex. The higher fees and the exchanges opening hours sometimes limited to the U.S.A. time zones work hours, make trading futures somewhat of a more difficult choice. Often times the brokers require a recurring payment to use their platform, they also often require to pay for the market price data feed. Sometimes they even ask a fee to give access to historic data. Often times, brokers demand several thousands of dollars to open an account. These amounts are required because of a feature called margin usually used in conjunction with another feature called “leverage“. Leverage lets traders earn more profits (or take bigger losses) by effectively multiplying their money at market. Futures come with medium and high leverage and this requires a larger buffer in their margin account.
  
  
• Shares, stocks: these are the most classic markets. They come with very low leverage and easily require accounts outside of the grasp of a new trader. Furthermore they have commissions not seen in Forex and managing open positions in them is harder. In fact they often show a low liquidity (this means, not many traders in those markets and not much money) and thus high volatility that may kick traders out of their trade.
  
  
• ETF, funds etcetera: those are more advanced and sometimes illiquid and deceiving markets (expecially the inverse ETFs). It’s suggested not to trade them until a good experience has been gained.
  
  
• Options and other markets: those are advanced markets best left to those with great experience, that is not this course’s audience.

Before proceeding with the rest of the course, the Reader should visit the following Baby Pips web sites and complete their beginner tutorial, called “school”, all down to “graduation”. This tutorial provides a very newcomer friendly introduction to Forex, this course’s choice as marketplace due to it being fast, easy and cheap to get started into.

Pressing the button to the right of a certain items category will make the market window cycle through all those items and then restart from the first item. The cycling is used by some uploaders.
The cycling will not stop until you press the last “Stop the updates” button.

The cycling takes some time due to several factors and EvE anti-server overload mechanics.

This is less time intensive than analyzing an EvE^® trading route or finding out which items are to sell and which to reprocess.

This article will not cover all the details involved in the trading decisions. For a very long and detailed process explanation please refer to this other example.

Why the trade happened and market analysis

This specific trade has been made because of three factors. The first is the series of minerals faucets nerfs announced for the Escalation to Inferno patch. The second is the concomitant EvE^® Online “special event”, Hulkageddon, organized by a player called Helicity Boson.

Hulkageddon causes ships destructions and minerals / ice isotopes shortage. This a nice earning opportunity for a series of players: industrial ships builders, suicide gank boats manufacturers, modules builders, miners and traders / speculators.

The third factor is about the very nature of EvE^® Online: minerals are all closely tied. All the ships and items tend to have similar proportions of the different minerals. What most players don’t know is that what once used to be an insurance forcibly imposed minerals basket has become a blueprint biased mineral basket. Therefore we still have a tie effect, even if it’s a diluted effect compared to the former insurance enforced mineral basket. The result of this effect is: when Tritanium becomes much more expensive due to the factors above, then the demand for the other minerals plummets and their prices sharply drop.

The trade

Since about April 9, 2012 I have been discussing about Tritanium on the EvE^® Online forums.

I had enough liquidity to buy Tritanium at the last March pin bar (PB), the one with the dotted line acting as support (acted as resistance for the range market (RM) right before its swing).

The following picture shows a cheat sheet about the trading method teached in this course. This cheat sheet shows a sample of bullish market, a buy operation and bullish patterns. For bearish markets the method is the same, just flip the graphs upside down and use bearish patterns.

How to use it:

1) Print the cheat sheet.

2) Have several markets available. The best trades don’t always happen on the same market, some times a market might spend months doing nothing relevant. The trader is meant to keep a basket of markets where to pick the best trades.

3) Look at the cheat sheet top left. Draw the monthly price levels and try and understand what’s going on in the market. One of the most important informations is to understand whether the market is going up or down.

4) Look at the cheat sheet bottom left. Draw the weekly price levels and make sure the weekly price is concording with the monthly.

5) Finally look at the cheat sheet right. Find a trade trigger price action pattern that sits on a retracement on a weekly (or monthly) price level.

Very important:

– Only closed bars are valid and relevant. Example: a weekly bar only closes at the end of the week. This means that before the end of the week you are looking at an half created bar which is irrelevant and potentially confusing. You have to look at the bar before it, since it’s the closest closed bar.
Same for the daily chart: looking in the middle of the day only shows half made and irrelevant bars. You have to look at the chart at the beginning of the trading day or to ignore the forming bar and look at the one before it.

– Price action bars patterns require a context and location. A bars pattern in the middle of nowhere has zero meaning. A bars pattern sitting at a price level is the only kind to consider.

I have ported an ancient, useful EvE^® Online application to the new API specifications.

The application is called EvE Income Analyzer, it has been created by Carbon Freezer several years ago and published as Sourceforge project.
The software is mostly useful to traders, it provides a number of eye catching graphs showing your profitability, your orders, your best sold items, the most profitable stations, the best hours of the day to sell and so on.

I have ported it to Visual Studio 2010 and made a number of modifications so that it would run with the new API format and keys.

Due to my ever pressing time constraints I am not going to be able and polish it. It works and it’s delivered as-is. If I get bug reports I’ll try and fix them but please don’t ask for expansions or whatever. Instructions about how to use the software are available at the bottom of the Sourgeforge page linked above.

Purpose

The purpose of this program is to help the user analyze his market transactions on eve-online. It helps the user by providing various views on the data to optimize his sales and manufacturing business. The tool can also work in offline mode without being connected to the server. Multiple characters can be administrated.

It uses the eve-api to extract all the necesary data. Once data is collected from the central server it is stored locally on the computer so even data older than the time window that is provided by eve can be analyzed once it is downloaded.

• Will provide several views on the data in upcoming future.

Where to download it

Since the original project was abandoned years ago, I have put my own previous Tyrannis versions of EvE Income Analyzer on this website.

The new Crucible (tested to work up to Odyssey) compatible version is available on its page in the downloads section as well.

How to install it

Download the small Setup.exe file and double click it. It will take care of installing what’s needed. Both fresh software install and upgrade to the new version have been tested on two computers of mine and by another player.

In case you see a certificate expired message, it’s because you are looking at this page more than a year past when I last updated the software and the certificate expired. It’s just a “paperwork” detail that you may safely ignore.

The first time you start the application you will need to input your API key and VCode. In case you don’t know where to get these, there’s a button to bring you directly to the appropriate EvE^® Online page for that. The key will need to have all the market related options enabled for the software to work. Once you entered the API keys, EvE Income analyzer will need to load all your data from the API, the process might take some minutes and the application will be unresponsive (frozen) until that operation is complete. I don’t particularly appreciate that behavior but adding progress bars and whatever goes beyond my available time.
